In the High Country you will find something to do in every season! Mountain biking, rafting, hiking, fishing, skiing, snowboarding, tubing, and bob sledding on the new Alpine Coaster in Banner Elk.
Some area attractions include:
Banner Elk winery, Apple Hill farm, Grandfather Mountain, Sugar Mountain, Beech Mountain, Appalachian State University in Boone, Lees-McCrae College in Banner Elk, the Overlook Barn, the original Mast General Store in Valle Crucis, Blowing Rock, Linville Falls, Roan Mountain, etc.
The majority of homes in the area are not equipped with AC. Usually, the mild days and cool nights in summer up here just don't justify the need. Opening windows and turning on fans is enough to cool the space.
Please note that in the winter there may be snow/sleet/rain so you will need to know how to drive in these conditions (possibly with snow chains) and use caution on icy, snowy, or leaf covered steps.
